Nationals Championship Director, Convenors and OIC
Oshawa, ON- After another successful summer of National Championships held across Canada, we are now able to reflect on some of the work our Director of National Championships, Convenors and Official’s in Charge (OIC) did to make these Championships a success.
These convenors and OIC’s serve as an extension of Lacrosse Canada when at National Championships. Their ability to put on a great National Championship while also representing Lacrosse Canada to the highest quality does not go unnoticed. These assignments take a lot of time, effort, and commitment, and these Championships would not be possible without it.
The Director of National Championships, Suzanne Belanger, a member who sits on the Board of Directors for Lacrosse Canada, donates countless volunteer hours to ensure Lacrosse Canada is putting forth the best product for all involved. Suzanne’s attention to detail, preparedness and professionalism in her first year of this role has elevated on how we deliver a great product to the athlete, coaches, parents, fans and officials.
The role of an LC Convenor is to act as the general supervisor of the event. Jobs include making sure the competition adheres to the regulations of LC, the rules of play, the hosting agreement, making sure all required forms are completed prior to the event, etc. Convenors also submit a report after the Championship so we at Lacrosse Canada can evaluate and improve on the experience for those, participating and/or watching.
As mentioned before, OIC’s also play a big role in making our National Championships run effectively. The OIC deals with all the officials at their respective Championship which includes many different roles. This includes scheduling officials, evaluating officials at the event, dealing with disciplinary issues, handling all communication between participants and officials, etc. The OIC also gets to work hand and hand with the LC Convenor for all games at the Championship, it is important for these individuals to become familiar with each other and build a relationship prior to the games, so that they can be prepared for any situation that may arise. Just like the Convenor, OIC’s submit a report to Lacrosse Canada after the event so we can give our officials the best resources possible to succeed at our National Championships in the future.
