Canada will play for a gold medal in Hong Kong after their 17-2 win over Japan in the semi-finals at Mong Kok Stadium.
Although Japan was their toughest competition yet, Canada was able to put on a masterful performance and win by a large margin. Two of Canada’s major contributors got the game started, as Lauren Black (BC) and Emily Dodd (AB) continued Canada’s trend of fast starts with two goals in the first two minutes. Canada would take a 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter nearly a mirror image of the first as Canada found the net 5 times again, the only difference being Japan was able to get one back to make it 10-1 at half time. Jami MacDonald (ON) finished with a first half hat trick.
In the second half, Canada held down the fort defensively, while also continuing to press on offence. A 4-0 third quarter followed by a 3-1 fourth capped off Canada’s 17-2 win.
The standout player from the game was never in doubt, as former Lady Blue Knight, and current Jacksonville Dolphin Maggie Cuddy was excellent all game long. She made multiple game changing plays and even tallied an assist from her defensive position. The whole defensive unit of D’Andrade (ON), Williams (ON), Jenkins (ON), and Spence (CO) were on their game tonight.
Canada now moves on to take on the only other undefeated team left in the tournament, the United States. Lacrosse’s best international rivalry will have another chapter written this Saturday at 6:30pm. The last time these two met in the final it was USA who came out with a 13-3 victory. Expect a motivated Canadian team who looks to take home our first gold in the Women’s U20 Championship since 2015.
