OTTAWA, ON—From June 2 to 5, 35 of Canada’s top junior men’s field lacrosse players will converge on Langley, BC, for the final evaluation and training camp prior to the announcement of the 23-player roster for the 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championship.
The first camp was held in October of 2019, which resulted in the player pool being narrowed to the top 32. The second camp was originally scheduled for spring 2020, but was postponed to November 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coaching staff invited an additional dozen players to attend, based on the expansion of World Lacrosse age limits.
That training roster has now been narrowed to the final 35, who will compete for one of the 23 spots on the national team.
“The wait is over,” said head coach Matt Brown. “After this camp, we will finalize the roster of 23 to travel to Ireland this summer to compete in the U21 World Championships. These athletes are the future superstars of our National Summer Sport.”
4 provinces will be represented by the 35 athletes. A full list of those participating in the evaluation camp can be found at the end of this release.
The coaching staff is comprised of head coach Matt Brown (University of Denver), Associate Head Coach Taylor Wray (Saint Joseph’s University), Offensive Coordinator Merrick Thomson (University at Albany), Defensive Coordinator Mark Miyashita (Canisius College), and assistant coaches Shawn Wilkins and Geoff Snider.
“British Columbia lacrosse enthusiasts will be treated to the top U21 players from across Canada for our final evaluation camp,” said Brown.
The team has decided to open practice sessions to the public, in order to celebrate the journey these athletes have gone on before they head to Ireland.
