Coaches for Fall Showcase Events Announced

Aug. 09, 2021

OTTAWA, ON— Lacrosse Canada has named their coaches for the October events scheduled to take place in Towson, MD. Matt Brown and Taylor Wray will lead the Senior Men’s field team at the Fall Classic, with Brodie Merrill and John Grant Jr. stepping up to coach the new 6v6 Men’s team. On the women’s side, Coach Scott Teeter will be leading the senior women’s team in the Fall Classic as well as the 6v6 team, in preparation for next summer’s World Championships.

Super Sixes

The eagerly anticipated, newly established 6v6 competition will feature members of the senior men’s and women’s lacrosse teams competing against the U.S. and Iroquois teams. It is scheduled for October 22-24.

Both Merrill and Grant Jr. were members of the 2006 Canadian senior national team, which saw the men’s team win its first World Lacrosse Championship, and received All-World team honours in the tournament.

“Both bring considerable experience playing box and field for Canada at the international level and have long professional careers in both disciplines.  We look forward to building the team and developing the strategy to play this fast-paced exciting game,” said Eddie Comeau, the team’s general manager.

Merrill, who began his playing career with the Orangeville Northmen, and was the first overall pick in the 2005 NLL Draft, has had a robust professional career.

Grant Jr. has had a similarly storied career. Currently, he is a member of the Johns Hopkins coaching staff, after years playing professionally.

Fall Classic

Finally, the annual USA Lacrosse Fall Classic will take place Oct. 15-17. The men’s team will be led by Matt Brown and Taylor Wray.

Brown, who has been working with Team Canada in a coaching capacity since 2012, currently serves as the men’s lacrosse associate head coach at the University of Denver. Prior, he had an extensive professional playing career.

Wray is currently in his tenth season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s University men’s lacrosse team, and has also had a celebrated professional career. He too has had over a decade of experience coaching Canadian National Teams.

Team general manager Dan Carey is excited to see how they will mold the team. “Matt and Taylor are tremendous coaches who both have a lot of experience at the international level. We are lucky to have their leadership and commitment,” he said.

Women’s Sixes and Classic

Scott Teeter is reprising his role as the senior women’s teams head coach, as announced in July.

Player rosters will be announced closer to competition.
